this is what Jeph grew up eating

More food photos to come, have no fear. As if we didn't photograph every single morsel!

(actually, we didn't, but many photos still to come!)

The NBF, in case it's never come up, graduated high school in Hawaii. A military brat, go figure. His background gives him a particular affinity for such things as Twiglets (oh wait - Jeph, is that right?) (Allison, you like them too?), kim chi, and these treats:

Is this what we call taking one (or two) for the team? Prizes to anyone who can identify these - other than Jeph, that is!

Ew, I honestly never ever had that first one! I can pretty much guess what it is based on looks and what you said you wanted to try, but no, I never had it.

And yes, those are the Twiglets - mmmm! And in a can? Weird! Cool!

Hm, thanks - now I've got a taste for kimchi - and that'll inevitably get me in trouble with Brett if I bring any into the house, particularly during the closed-window season! ;-) I'll blame you!

Ps the second pic? Yum!

You never had the first one? You were the one urging me to try it before the Maui trip in 2006!

Blame me all you will - I know that Brett loves me thanks to ice cream!

As for the second pic, very yum! And in case I didn't mention it, we got beans in it.

I do like Twiglets. Strange taste, but strangely appealing.

Is one of those concoctions a doughnut?

A doughnut? Nope. Think savoury!

I think the latter, colourful pic is one of ice and beans and other goodness (it's a dessert called halo halo - Filipino friend of mine introduced me to it). Am I right?

Ooooh, great guess Brenda. And kind of similar. I've never heard of halo halo despite all my Filipino family, in fact. But no, the treat there is called shave ice. No milk involved, but a bunch of syrups. This one had mango, pineapple, and li hing mui (dried salted plum) syrups and had sweetened adzuki beans inside.

Yum!

Now then, the other? Any guesses?

Yeah, that's it! A different name but very similar...ice, fruits, beans, and syrup...mmmm. No clue what the other one is. Looks like rice and seaweed (kinda like a big piece of sushi!).

Again, really close Brenda. Jeph, if you're reading this, care to tell her?

Sorry, I can't help with the first as I'd never heard of it, nor have I had SPAM. (Yes, I did say YOU should try SPAM, but that doesn't mean *I'M* gonna eat it!) ;-)

And the second is shaved ice - hopefully suicide style as I told you to get it. Looks like you did the big reveal in a more recent post, and that shows that, yeah, you got that sucker loaded up good! I don't think I ever had shaved ice with the beans, but might've tried someone elses? Remember, I was still in high school, and not QUITE as adventurous with the food as I am now!

Jeph, you lie slightly my friend. The musubi has come up in e-mail between us in the past, but I was wrong, I admit, to think that you had suggested it to me based on past experience.
