Friday night before vacation

Writing this on Friday night, posting on Saturday.  Conrad and I have an afternoon flight from Burbank to Denver and an overnight at the Westin at the airport there.  I wish we were getting together with Laurie and Marc, but next time.  I hope!  My spring break looms, and time in New England beckons.  And what better way to head off on vacation than by enjoying dinner at Maestro?  You got me!

Mild evening temperatures meant we could sit outside.  No live music tonight, alas, but we still had a good time, and the restaurant (indeed, many of the restaurants in the neighbourhood), was doing some good business.  We ordered cocktails - a mezcal negroni for me

- and a starter of queso fundido,

and settled in to enjoy the evening.  Conrad and Van were across the table from me,

sipping their drinks.  Conversation ranged all over.  We had a good time.

Calamari followed the queso,

and then the cochinita pibil.

My gosh, that last one, a pork dish, is so good.  Yum.

No dessert for us.  We came back to the condo for a bit, discussed Olympics tickets purchases, and then Van headed home.  A nice night before heading out of town, very welcome.

Happy Saturday, happy Easter weekend!

second weekend in September

So, you already know that we spent last Friday evening with Van and Olive over at the condo, but how did the rest of the weekend, you wonder?  Well then, let me tell you....

Friday afternoon, after I was done work, Conrad and I drove over to Glendale to the Brand Library and Art Center, part of that city's public library system.

A friend of mine from Chicago, Doug, had a piece in Brand 53: 53rd Annual National Juried Exhibition of Works on Paper, and I wanted to get over to see it before the show closed.  Handsome little piece,

and I liked the show overall.  There was a large work there for a mere $15,000 that I would not have minded seeing in my home, provided I won a lottery and had a new, big home with some blank walls!

Saturday morning I got out on a walk without Conrad.  Indeed, he rather slept in that morning, and it was far later than usual that I got him out to door and down to Amara for breakfast.

We did stuff around the condo on Saturday, then made our way to Van and Olive

later on for dinner out on the deck, where Van had done some replanting of his pots.

Last Words all around,

and cheers to us enjoying that together.

I got up yesterday morning, and I admit, I just did not want to go out walking all around town.  I took myself grocery shopping instead (and look!  TJ's has the salted maple ice cream back in stock for the autumn),

then came home to make Conrad and me pancakes and bacon for breakfast.  I did spend much of the day cooking some food for Conrad because I head out of town on Wednesday (and I'm at Van's tonight), and then he and I grabbed a nap before moseying over to Maestro for an overdue dinner there.  Cocktails (Last Word for him,

a mezcal negroni

and then a Jungle Bird for me),

queso fundido,

beet salad,

the chicken mole

- it was so good to be back.  What an odd year we've had, it feels, of trying to be regulars at our favourite places!

And then this morning, it was up and at 'em, on foot for a handful of miles in the fog (that did burn off by the time I was done)

before making myself pretty and getting the work week started.

That concludes the weekend report!

spritz night!

It was the July online happy for us, and the theme was spritzes.  A fun summer drink, and lots of ways to modify it.  So I did!  Here's a stoplight:  cassis spritz, limoncello spritz, and a Hugo (elderflower spritz).

I also tried making a Cynar spritz and an orange liqueur spritz, but no, alas, they were not as good.

Ultimately, the Hugo won out

(and an Aperol spritz for the second round).  And so we sat outside and sipped and got caught up before I pulled out a grazing board for dinner.

Fun times!

second weekend in February

Remember last weekend?  Maestro on Friday night,

Amara on Saturday morning?

Same thing this weekend.  But we were at the condo last night, not Van's.  I made us dinner again, though:  lamb chops with an eggplant and pea curry and saffron rice.

And then today, Sunday, it's more cooking, with a vegetarian lasagna in the oven for me and Van tomorrow.

In short, a regular weekend.

Conrad is off to Japan tomorrow, Van and I will enjoy each other's company through Saturday, and next weekend is a long weekend.  Let's see what the middle of February brings.

13

No, not the Blur album.  Good album!  One of my faves by them, and I do like a lot of their stuff.  I'm getting off track....

Yesterday marked 13 years of marriage for us.  23 years since our first date as well - that anniversary was this past Saturday.  Hooray for us!

No going out to celebrate this year.  We'll save that for a milestone ahead, perhaps.  Or just a regular date night.  No, I wanted to cook us a nice dinner.  And I somewhat succeeded - that halibut was a little over, sorry to say.  But anyway....

Shopping at Eataly this past weekend helped.  We started with a Vesper each

and some tarallini to snack on while I put together a simple burrata platter.

Once that was on the table (and oh, what lovely flowers from Van to celebrate our anniversary - that was so sweet of him),

I poured us each some chenin blanc.  Music in the background, no other distraction.  Sitting and enjoying food and wine and talking.  I told Conrad it would be a slow meal - finish making one course and then it was on to the next.  Our second course was a simple pasta with some truffles.

Reminiscent of what we had in Italy, but the truffles were preserved from a jar.  Not the same as the fresh item, of course, but it was pretty decent anyway.  And a splurge.  Speaking of splurge, a 2012 Amarone della Valpolicella - an Eataly purchase.  We enjoyed that one,

but when I went to the wine fridge to retrieve it, I found that we also had a 2006 of the same style of wine but a different vintner.  That one will be saved for Christmas, and may it have survived what likely have been years of moves and doubtless variation in storage condition.  We shall.  Anyway, I cooked us a bit of halibut with some lightly roasted carrots, drizzled with some olive oil we brought back from our Italian vacation and dotted lightly with some very good aged balsamic vinegar.

That was a lot, and we decided to forego the cookies and ice cream I had for us for dessert.  Otherwise just a nice and - yes, truly - simple dinner at home with some good wine to toast each other and 13 years of marriage!

Montana escape, day 3

Our third day was an easy day in Montana.  How easy?  We didn't leave the hotel grounds once and barely went outside otherwise.

Oh, I did get out early in the morning.  I was awake far before Van, so I went down to get a decaf latte and muffin, and from there wandered around outside, taking photos of the hotel building and other facilities.  Friends, the Montage is a stunning property.  Just look at that outside.

And the great room,

and the bar.

And that cool old style tour bus.

All of it was beautiful.  Would I go back.  Oh heck yes, would I.

Van did get going, and we enjoyed coffee together and writing postcards from the day before.  Lunch time rolled around, and we headed over to Backcast, behind the hotel, and sat at the bar.  I enjoyed a Rice Blossom cocktail,

and we shared salad, cold soba, and gyoza.

A light meal before our afternoon spa session.

Sorry, no photos from the spa.  No one needs to see me in there!  But what a great amenity.  For one thing, the robes provided actually fit larger men like us.  WOW!  That never seems to happen.  For another, the changing room had its own hot tub and steam room.  Look, I'm not a prude, and I can happily use facilities that are mixed gender, but it's nice that we could just hang up the robes and soak and steam without a care.  And really, it was without a care - we saw one woman at the shared pool when we were given the tour, and that was the only time we saw anyone else other than spa staff.  A quiet period at the hotel in between seasons, it seems.

Van and I spent a few hours enjoying massage and soaking, and then finally had to bring the spa time to an end.  We had dinner reservations in the hotel's finer dining room, Cortina, and we needed to get ready.

Cortina?  Exceptional.  The menu reads Italian, and so I thought it would be fine, but the progression was delightful.

We each had a cocktail to start and then shared most of a bottle of an Oregon pinot noir recommended by the charming sommelier.  As for the food, well, we shared the first few things:

Burrata with tomatoes and arugula.

Simple, fine, a compromise between me and Van on a starter.

Pappardelle with bolognese.

Outstanding.  So tasty.

Venison.

Simply venison and a reduction sauce.  Van had the trout (steelhead), and we shared some grilled broccolini.  But that venison?  Oh my word.  Tender like nothing I'd had before.  We each ate very slowly and were almost laughing at how ridiculously good it all was.

Oh, we had bread as well!

And then came a dessert to share.  We weren't too hungry, but it was hard to resist ordering one, so I opted for the pistachio boudino.

Just look at this work of art that came out.

An indulgent night, and I have to admit, it was rough sleep and a very easy morning to follow.  But oh, so worth it.  When life hands you a hotel like that, it's always good to savour the staying in rather than the venturing out.
