whoa, really?

Yes, really.  Twice in one month!  What amazing miracle is this?

2000 yards this morning.  Great weather for it, too - utter May grey and no worries of sunburn.  If I hadn't had to get myself home and make myself pretty for work, I would have swam a wee bit more.  But only a wee bit.

None of which is to say it was a good swim.

But it was a swim, so, at least there's that!

so, this happened, and yeah, it was gross

Travel plus cold/respiratory infection plus no access to pool at the college plus (and this is most critical) my disinclination to go have added up to two months and a bit spent NOT swimming.  Today, though, I rallied myself to get down to the Rose Bowl

and get my alarming fat butt into the pool.

And yeah, it sucked.  Big time.

I tell myself that it was better than no swim at all, but I also tell myself not to let this be the last time for two months.  We shall see.

Sigh.

Positive thoughts, Peter.  Positive thoughts.

oh, and hey...

... while I'm posting short blog entries until I get my act together to do a proper one:  I swam yesterday.

And it was as awful as you might imagine.

Sigh.

Blech. Sigh.

I really need to swim more often than I do.  Don't let the smile fool you:  that was an awful, lumbering effort.

Sigh.

Better than zero, right?  Sometimes, it feels, it barely is.

I have been swimming...

... not much, but I am.  Tuesdays and Thursdays unless travel or something disrupts me.

What's changed is that I've been able to swim at work.  An indoor pool, and pretty much entirely to myself every time I've gone.  No fear of sunburn if I swim too long.  It's been good to be able to head over there at lunch time and get in a splash.  My swimming is, well, shit, but at least I'm doing a little of it.

It's been an active day overall.  It was a foggy morning

when I set out

on a walk today, but by the end of the 5.2 miles, it was a nice morning out.

I'll continue to swim when I can through the semester, and perhaps when Conrad is able to swim again, he and I can head to the Rose Bowl together.  If so, I'll be sure to grab a pool deck selfie!

busy day!

7.31 miles on foot this morning,

then a short swim.

Maybe, just maybe, if I can keep up this level of activity and not dine like this past weekend or even last night every single day, I might fit into some of my clothes again!  We shall see.

But I admit, I am fascinated by the step count numbers.  Data can be fun!

three days in a row again!

For a month that started off with me enduring a bout of Covid and finding myself sticking to the bedroom and barely getting out of bed for a few days, it's ended well in terms of activity.  From last Friday through to today, seven consecutive days, I have tracked as workouts walks that have totaled 46.17 miles in distance.  Not too shabby.  Meanwhile, for a second week this month, I have tallied swims three days in a row, building up my endurance there.  Hooray!  I do still limit my swims not just by my current terrible fitness level, but also by sun exposure - the drawback to swimming outdoors and being a redhead, right?  Still, the May Grey this week and my schedule have conspired to let me swim a little more.  1650 yards on Tuesday,

1700 meters (the pool was set up for long course, much to my surprise) yesterday,

and 3000 yards today.

I am hopeful that during the summer ahead, my schedule will continue to be pool friendly.  Fingers crossed!

is there such a thing as a hate swim?

I'm in a vile mood this afternoon, I am sorry to admit.  It will pass soon - no later than 39 days from now, I hope.  I took time out this afternoon to pop over to the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center and get a swim.  Alas, it just made for twenty or so minutes of me stewing in my mood, thinking unhappy thoughts.  A hate swim, perhaps?  No matter.  The swim is done, and I will try to have a nice evening.

um, whoa... what?!

Three days IN A ROW???  And now with added Conrad?  What is even happening here?

A morning meeting ended early, so we snuck off to the pool before coming back to resume the work day.  Not a long swim yet again - only a short break in the day, and I am wary of the sun exposure - but it is good to get a few days in a row done.  No swim tomorrow.  That will wait until next Tuesday.  And hooray for Conrad being able to get in the water with me today!

a streak?

What's this?  Two days in a row?  Goodness!

Now if only I could swim longer, better, and faster while I'm at it!

shockingly...

... I made it back to the pool after, what, four weeks away?

It was a swim.  Not my worst.  I could have gone longer save for the need to get myself home, through the shower, dressed, and off to work.  Better than zero.  For today, I'll take it.

a surprisingly busy week

Happy Good Friday!

It's been a surprisingly busy week, and although I thought I would be able to carve out time to begin posting from spring break, I'll have to catch up on that this weekend when I can.  Sorry!

For now, let me report in from the little bits of down time not spent at my laptop and blogging:

A swim on Wednesday.

Another, longer swim on yesterday.

An Alaska before making dinner for me and Van last night.

A longer walk (a hair shy of 4.5 miles) to start my Friday.

We've caught up on White Lotus.  Conrad and I had a last breakfast before his trip and then my next one keep us apart for more than two weeks.  I've had time with Olive.  And life at the library has been hectic catching up after the break and now gearing up for the many many ALA meetings in the next couple of weeks.  Yikes.

But all is generally well.  And Sonoma posts will come!

what's been going on?

How go things, Peter, you ask?  Oh, not badly.  Conrad is in Kentucky until later today.  Next week is spring break.  Things tick along.  I spent most of Wednesday over on the west side,

or so it felt, taking Van to an appointment, waiting for things to be done, then bringing him home an making sure he had food before coming back home.  I swam yesterday, which was good

- I'll miss that next week but try to be diligent the following week.  It rained a little here,

and there was a huge peal of thunder that had folks on Reddit wondering if there was an explosion somewhere (look at the dark skies, folks, that should be a clue).  Van and I have been watching a bunch of the current season of White Lotus (binge-worthy this season, far better than season 2, which I gave up on).

The usual?  Maybe not, but there you go, caught up!  Onward with April!

first swim of April

No, not an April Fools joke.  I swam.  Not a big swim, but in combination with a good walk, a nice, active start to the day.

I really have to take photos that don't have the red reflecting off the awning colouring my face...

oh, I swam yesterday

And you know what?  It wasn't terrible.  I mean it.  A little longer, a little more speed, a little better endurance.  I was actually not down on myself when I finished.  Weird.  But good!

Thursday, March 20, 2025

what, again???

Two days in a row of swimming?  Whoa!!!

And it wasn’t even a terrible swim!

Wednesday, March 19, 2025

oh, hey, look!

I swam.

And so the ongoing love/hate relationship with the pool endures.

The funny thing?  If all goes well, I will be back in the pool tomorrow.  Back to back days!!

a perfect day for it, but for…

… my schedule and needing to get in to work by a certain time.  Darn it.  But yes, the thing about outdoor pools in SoCal and being a ginger is that I have to cap how long I swim else I might burn.  Today?  Overcast, threatening rain.  My endurance was alright, too.  I could have stayed in longer.

But no, work calls, alas.

a Tuesday swim happened

And that is about all I can say.

Oh, I can blather on a bit more.  It wasn't a great swim in terms of speed, endurance, or technique, but it was nice to have a fairly calm, quiet pool and a bit of time this morning to splash around.  Here's hoping I can hop in again on Thursday!

last swim of February

I won't say it was a good swim, but I will say that having swam earlier this week, I felt a little better in the water on Thursday when I made it to the pool for a splash.

Making it even better?  Conrad made it to the pool with me!  YAY!

Let's see how the March swims go....
