coat of many colours

If Conrad had a dollar for every time he received a compliment/comment on his Hudson Bay coat on this trip, well, he'd have a nice chunk of money.

I LOVE this coat. I COVET this coat. I can never wear it: it's Conrad through and through. Darn it.

Revel in his adorableness if you will - I have to get us packed up here at the Maple Leaf Lounge and to our gate....

shopping in YVR

Because no vacation trip to Vancouver would be complete without visits to my temple, The Bay, and my new shrine, Koda Klothing,
and my long time mainstream Canadian obsession, Roots, I offer you photos of shopping done, things considered (but not purchased), and a glimpse into how very stereotypically gay I can be and was on the most recent trip up.

The fun hat from a shop on Granville Island? Inspired by Martin, of course!

And, frankly, I look pretty snazzy in a new shirt found at Koda paired with a jacket on sale from The Bay on the previous trip up.

One day, however, I shall shop with my other retail god (TK, the Master of All Things Outlet is the first shopping god I worship), Chris. The things he finds are remarkable. I will be brave...

sea of red

Sure, he flashes a hint of blue and yellow, but really, Conrad has fallen deep into Canuckistani identity. Just look at that tuque on him! Roots! Actually, the Right to Play tuque, a cooperative effort with Roots. Just wait until we start dressing in all the gear we were buying at The Bay today. I know we'll be back at the Olympic Store again.

In fact, the gear is one really cool things about this event. Oh, quibble with the design (I like a lot of the Canada stuff, not so much of the blue and green Vancouver 2010 stuff), but it's a kick to see so many people wearing it. Red, everywhere. The mittens, for example, are ubiquitous. Marie had a pair for Conrad,
and I already had mine, so we fit in well.

We're not a country that is so very unabashedly patriotic, but it wouldn't be a bad thing if we were a little more demonstrably proud of our heritage than usual. Walking around the city, today, the sea of red was a glorious sight. Tomorrow, I don more red and join my people. With glowing heart, of course!

Five years ago

Wow, that post title makes this sound like an episode of Heroes. Or maybe I really do need some sleep. By 2:00 I'll try again, but if not, I'm cracking open a book instead!

I haven't cooked much fun stuff lately, what with travel and catching up with the housework and the like. You can only see so many views from our windows of the snow and slush below. I don't have fresh material.

But I do have thousands of photos from the pre-blog years!

Five years ago I was in TO at this time, staying with Allison for a bit. And now look at her - all engaged to a really great guy and still lovely as ever. I'm happy that we'll get to see her and Sean this fall, though with the whirlwind of the wedding, there may not be the time for some of our old favourite things like The Bay.No matter. We can always have a good meal together (photos from a Greek place on the Danforth, taken during Winterlicious that year).

And I know Brenda will be most displeased with me for adding in this old photo of her with Allison!

I hope also to see Liza - an old high school classmate- and Sander - now a father! Wow. Time really does fly.

As for Chris, well, he's in Vancouver now, so with some luck we'll catch up with him when we're up there in a few weeks.

Why does it seem that all our trips to TO are now for weddings? I have the common western Canadian dislike/resentment of the place, but it's not too bad to visit, really. Oh, I cringe every time someone here says it's just like Chicago, only cleaner. I think TO is both more interesting in its greater population diversity and more boring in its effort to be the center of the universe. In any case, TO tries to be NYC instead!

Happy birthday Allison!

Wow, Allison (or, as Conrad knows you, AllisonAllisonAllison!), have I really known you for 9 years now? Way back when we were young idealistic liberry school classmates? That long since I lived two floors above you on Guilbault, and we would go to "Cat Frur" (to quote Jenn W's pronunciation) or get noodles or see great films (and some dire ones) at Cinema du Parc? Nine years ago tomorrow (Friday) that I made you a batch of white chocolate chip cookies and brought them to class?

Hunh. Time flies. I'm sorry we don't get up to TO as much as we should, but I've managed to see you at least once a year since our time in Montreal, or so it seems.

Happy birthday (and safe travels to Greece to the two of you!)!

And for those who don't know Allison quite so well (and really, you should, because she, like CG, totally rocks), I present Allison in the 21st Century:

2001, one Chicago visit from her and one TO visit from me

2002, in Chicago

2003, two trips to TO for me! Hey, and how did Brenda sneak into one of those shots???

2004, in Michigan for Darth and Heidi's wedding

(We did get to TO in 2005, honestly, but we forgot the camera. Oh wait, was that actually in 2004? Hmmmm.)

2006, here in Chicago

2007, in Auckland NZ
