The tree is up! The tree is up!

Is it only Saturday?  Is it still Saturday?  This long weekend has me confused and confounded - no sense of routine, seemingly non-stop in the kitchen.  But come on, it's worth it.  I mean, look....

Leftovers turned into mashed potato soup (garnished with caviar - Natasha came over, and we like to give her that treat when we can).

Leftovers turned into turkey pot pie.

Giving myself a pat on the back for using up leftovers so well.  And my gosh, is there a lot more in the fridge.  We'll do what we can with it.  Tomorrow, though, I swear that it is microwaving things only.  I have cooked enough this past week.

Enough complaining.  We had a nice evening.  Van showed up wearing his Christmas fox tshirt, and that inspired me to put on a fleecy Christmas bunny sweatshirt.

The table was set simply but nicely.

And, best of all, we have a tree.

Yes, that is a tree, a modernish tree that Van bought for his former place in Rancho Mirage and that we now keep in storage here.  We decided to go with that this year.  I'm happy we did.  Oh, I will love seeing all the ornaments in a future year, but for this year, a much simpler and easier Christmas in terms of decor.

14 more cards done today.  I should do more before bed, but I think I won't.  Yaaawwwwn.  I'm a little fatigued, I confess.  Happy long weekend - I hope you all have trees up by now!

Saturday morning in Pasadena

It should be clear by now how very much I love early mornings.  I can get things done, I can enjoy time to myself.  This morning, before Old Pasadena got busy with breakfasters/brunchers and shoppers, before Conrad was out of bed, I took myself out on foot.

A quick pass by a mailbox to drop off the first round of cards written this weekend (32!!  Patting myself on the back for that effort yesterday), and then it was a short amble before coming home to get to work on dealing with leftovers and preparing a bit for Van and Natasha to come by this evening.  Out past Castle Green,

crossing Fair Oaks and pausing to capture a view that traffic normally does not permit me to capture,

wandering farther west before crossing an absolutely silent Colorado Boulevard - that pink stripe down the middle is what Rose Parade floats follow

- and then through an alley behind Starbucks to remind myself of the artwork there

I've long been fond of that work by Ellis.

I'm pausing now in the morning decaf and Christmas cards routine to post this, but it's carols and writing for me until lunchtime.  We'll get the tree up later, enjoy turkey pot pie tonight, and tomorrow we'll head to see Wicked.  One more week of the semester to go.  The year is winding down nicely.

US Thanksgiving 2024

Two warnings:  1) I am my own worst critic, and 2) I was rather too busy in the kitchen to take many photos.

Hello!  Happy Friday, the day after US Thanksgiving.  A day for many to shop, though I just walked back from picking up lattes at Amara, and Old Pasadena was not exactly hopping, not yet.  A day to recover for others.  A day for me to get to work on Christmas cards!  And a day to blog about dinner yesterday.

Look, after many years of not really doing well and asking Merp to take over turkey duty when she was with us, I found a recipe that works for me for the most part.  I had that bird in the oven at 5:35, and I basted regularly.  Looks great, right?

It was overcooked, alas.  It came apart beautifully, but that meat was dry as anything.

Sigh.  On the plus side, I felt like a made a good gravy this year thanks to pan juices, a roux, and a stock that I had made and then enriched with the giblets.  I do love me some gravy!

It was a nice dinner, though.  Van and Olive were there, of course, and Van brought his late husband's young cousin, Heath.  It was good to include Heath while his wife was back in Texas with family, and it's always nice to include Van's loving memories of Doug and Doug's family.  I hope we meet Nicole one day, too.  We also invited Stephen, who is always welcome company, and Paul came up from the desert with his dog, Voltaire.  Six men, two dogs - not a packed house, but plenty for us.  I made them all cocktails and sent them to the living room to stay out of my hair, and at a reasonable time, got dinner on the table.

Here's a run down - no photos, alas:

  • Turkey and gravy
  • Dressing (since I didn't cook it in the bird, so it's not stuffing - I love being pedantic!)
  • Brussels sprouts - a new recipe for them, made with pancetta and in a balsamic glaze.  The dish went over well, but I would dial back the balsamic in the future, use a bigger cut for the pancetta (it was a packaged dice that I felt got lost in the glaze), and cook the sprouts less.
  • Carrots, steamed and buttered and sprinkled with fresh dill
  • Roasted white onions
  • Roasted delicata squash - I love this squash because of the colour of the skin, which I leave on.  I drizzled with a light dressing made with pomegranate molasses before roasting.
  • Roasted (see a theme here?) slices of Japanese sweet potatoes.  I am not fond of the overly sugary sweet potato concoctions that are usually on offer, and don't get me started on marshmallows!
  • Cranberry relish - a recipe from when I worked at the restaurant (and a relish we served with pork), consisting of four ingredients placed in a food processor, no cooking.  People enjoyed that one a lot.  My confession:  I have never liked cranberry with turkey.
  • Buttermilk and chive mashed potatoes
  • Cloverleaf rolls - my first time with this recipe, and while I will make them again, I will make them day of, not a day before then reheat.  I think they suffered for that.  I also think I needed to let them rise more.  They were ok.

I feel like I am forgetting something savoury.  Ah well.  That's plenty, right?

Van, Conrad, and I picked up apple and pumpkin pies from Jennifer's on Tuesday, and we had them ready for dessert.  But Stephen has a gluten intolerance, and I wanted him to have dessert, too.  I found a pumpkin parfait recipe, and then spruced it up (it would have been too much bland sweetness otherwise) by layering in a cranberry caramel sauce that I made.

I was pleased with the dessert for the most part, but it's another I would make closer to serving if I were to do it again.

Heath brought Champagne, and we all toasted with that.  The others went with some red wine, but I decided I would open a white, a BC white, and enjoy that.  Folks left by around 9:30, and I hope a good time was had.  I got back into the kitchen and back to work, and with Conrad helping out, we had everything clean before 11!

Oh, sure, there's a dishwasher full of dishes to be emptied and a load of dishtowels and such in the drier from last night as well, but we'll get those done at some point!  On to Christmas cards here shortly....

drag show at Maestro

This will post sometime around when I am about to get the turkey on the table, or something like that, so I may as well capture some energy for blogging now because I will NOT want to hop online after dinner.  Maybe tomorrow, though that may also be a day devoted to Christmas cards.

Conrad, Van,

and I took ourselves over to Maestro on a Wednesday night last night.  Not our usual night, not a usual dinner.  Drag night, one of the occasional ones that they do.  And hooray for that.  They're always fun.

After being blasted away with music through our first round of drinks,

we moved to the table farthest from the DJ.  Which was cool - the queens all made their way down to us, and I like to think that they appreciated that there were three homos there, clapping and cheering and swaying and such.  The crowd last night wasn't very gay, and it wasn't very upbeat, alas.  But still, it was fun!

Five great queens, and it was lovely that we got some hellos and hugs from them at the end of the night.  So, thank you to Melissa Befierce,

Angelina,

Sabbyiana,

Athena Kills,

and Ruthless Envy

for such a great time!  And kudos to Van for being a gentleman and helping a lady with her skirt.

things underway

It's 9:50 AM as I start this entry.  That means the turkey has been in the oven for 4.25 hours already.  Yes, I was awake early.  Yes, I need a nap soon.  I've trimmed 4 pounds of Brussels sprouts, I have carrots to trim up and mashed potatoes to make and cranberry sauce as well.  Everything else needs to be reheated at the appropriate time.  And the table, well, it's mostly set.

In short, a typical Thursday, innit?

checking in before bed

It will be an early morning tomorrow and a long day in the kitchen.  I’ve already got a lot done for tomorrow, but more to come.  And more to blog from tonight:  we took in a drag show at Maestro, and it was a blast!  So… stay tuned for an update on that at some point after I get the turkey in the oven.

today’s reminder

Olive is a pretty girl.  That is all.

The Champs-Élysées

Monthly online happy hour for us yesterday, and with three birthdays in November, we decided that birthday would be the theme.  So I decided I would make what the birthday folks wanted, and I ended up shaking up three Champs-Élysées per Van's request.  A cognac sour that uses green chartreuse.  Conrad was not a fan, but Van and I liked it well enough.

And now to get offline and get to cleaning for Thursday!

I think I'm ready for this week...

Check in on me on Friday and see how exhausted I am.  I will be BUSY in the kitchen later this week.  US Thanksgiving, of course.  Van will pick up the turkey on Wednesday.  I think that we otherwise ready....

happy birthday, Van!

A weekend that started well with a dinner in Santa Monica, a Jane Siberry performance, and picking up Conrad (late as it was) at the airport got even better with a Saturday celebration of Van's birthday.  Another trip around the sun completed.  Hooray!

Conrad and I sent Van downtown to the Conrad hotel for a relaxing massage and spa session in the afternoon, then met him at the hotel for dinner at San Laurel.  We were last there for a birthday dinner for me, so this felt appropriate.  Conrad and I

arrived a little before Van, so we ordered a martini for him and a Polka Dotted Coleman for me,

and settled in to wait and have a nice dinner when he joined us.

And it was a nice dinner.  Van enjoyed the same cocktail as me,

and although we ordered our own entrees, we shared a bunch of things:  jamon profiteroles,

fennel soup with crab,

stracciatella salad,

eggplant,

and a Basque cheesecake among them.

I liked my scallops,

but I loved the vermicelli mac and cheese that we shared as a side dish.  Service was good, though there was a bit of mix up in the kitchen.  Our waiter kept us updated and checked in and even brought out some jamon to enjoy because of a delay.  Thank you, Sebastian, for that.

I woke up before the others today, unsurprisingly.  Olive and I got out the door for a walk.

It's autumn now, clearly,

and we even had a light bit of rain.  After the walk, I relaxed until the other two were up and around, then I picked up Starbucks

for us to enjoy along with a pannetone.

I think I'll be shoveling back a lot of that delicious bread/cake in the weeks ahead!

So, then, happy birthday to Van!  Months to go until mine, the next one we'll celebrate.
