Friday in Vancouver

The loooong weekend in Vancouver was pretty packed with people to see and with food and beverage to consume, so let's take this day by day, shall we?  Agreed?  Good!

Last Friday I visited a place I hadn't been in a couple of months, curiously enough:  LAX.  My first flights of 2026, and it took me until February to do so.  Without a midwinter conference to attend, there was no travel by plane in January.  But last Friday brought me back to the familiar sights from the United Club at Terminal 7

and then the familiar feeling of an exit row aisle seat.

I dozed off, then read, and I was on the ground in Vancouver by noon.  Canada Line to Waterfront, a block or so to walk to the hotel, and - happily! - there was a room ready for me.

I checked in, dropped my bags, headed to the club for a not-too-late and not-too-large lunch, then came back to unpack.  And nap.  Yep, nap.  The nice thing about getting away is doing things like that, and since I had a king bed

all to myself for four nights, I took advantage!

Friday evening rolled around, and I freshened up.  It was a mile or so to walk over to Yaletown to meet up with Steven and Jenny for dinner at Capo and the Spritz.

So good to see them again!  It had been much longer than I realized - over two years! - and I missed out on the last opportunity because I was sick in the hotel room.  We had a great time catching up over a couple of drinks (I had a negroni variation called The Alpine Fire that was tasty enough for a second one) and a special Restaurant Week menu.  I liked the food there - it didn't blow me away, but it was good, and the special price for three courses was terrific.  Especially when you check out how generous a portion that lamb shank was!

They drove me back to the hotel, and I forewent any sort of nightcap.  Night closed over the city, and I turned in at an entirely decent hour.

three Vancouver meals with friends

(and let me pause before launching into this to say that, with this post, I will essentially have caught up on the backlog of travel and dining and more)

(and let me also say, Peter: it's about bloody time!)

Anyone who has even casually skimmed this blog would know that I like to eat well and drink well.  Our brief visit to Vancouver afforded us opportunities to do so, happily.  Let's dig in!

Thursday evening Conrad and I walked and trained and walked on over to Zarak to meet Chris

and Allister

for dinner.  The restaurant, which features Afghani cuisine, was Chris' suggestion.  And you know, well done, Chris.  Very well done.

All of us had cocktails, save for Conrad who started with a bottle of wine that we eventually shared (and ordered a second one of).  I liked mine, a light cocktail called Heritage

that seemed not to be alcoholic at all, which means it was dangerous.  Chris, however, got the show thanks to ordering the Dr. Damji's Negroni.  Fun!

And then we got down to food.  Oh, what food!  I didn't get a shot of the green beans, but they were a highlight.  The mantu were beautiful but not as flavourful as the beans.

I still enjoyed them.  The buttermilk fried chicken was a delight.

The lamb shoulder was equally as delightful.

The bolani was fine, the least memorable of our dishes (and yet, still tasty enough).

The Uzbeki palaw was a jewel.

Piping hot, the rice grains each distinct, chunks of tender meat hidden in there.  I would go back just for that dish alone.

We also ordered one of each dessert (there were four).  I wasn't all that interested in vegan chocolate mousse, and although I tasted it and thought it was fine, it proved to be the least interesting to me.

The tres leches cake was tasty but I still don't understand what it was doing on that menu.

The shir yakh was lovely - I like rose water as a flavour, and having it in an ice cream tamed it well.

The firni, a milk pudding, I dismissed at first, but I kept coming back to because the subtlety lured me in.

My favourite of the desserts.

An excellent dinner, and we've been spreading the word about the place since.

Friday!  Friday lunch was at the club, sitting out on the terrace under mostly cloudy skies but still enjoying being out there.  Our friends from Germany, Gerd

and Uwe,

joined us.  The day before had been Uwe's 60th birthday, and Gerd's 60th will be in October, so we wanted to treat them to a meal.  This is the second time that we have met up with these friends on a Vancouver vacation - our original connection is through the magic of Instagram.  We sipped a BC white and had a leisurely lunch.  My seafood Cobb salad

was different than I have had it before, I think - they could have dialed back on the tomatoes (which I didn't even get to, the salad was so big) and maybe not used such a mix of greens (it was a little rough by contrast to the seafood).  But I didn't go hungry, that's for sure!

Dinner was with Jenny and Steven, whom we always enjoy seeing when we're in town.  We went to the Main Street location of Sula for Indian food.  The restaurant had a good cocktail program, which is not something I have seen very often in Indian restaurants, and a nice wine list.  The bar

sent out our drinks, and mine was a light variation on a Last Word.

Refreshing!  When I ordered wine with the meal, the waitress let us know that they were out of the one I ordered and instead recommended an Indian red wine.  She let me try some, I liked it, and it turned out to be a doubly good recommendation:  we had a nice wine with the meal, and it was a first time trying wine from India.  Oh, and the winery?  Also named Sula.

I didn't photograph much of the food.  A few of the dishes were meats or vegetables or cheese in a sauce, a curry or gravy, however we might call it.  And, sorry, those don't always make for the most interesting photos, alas.  Not a worry.  Here is the appetizer platter we shared.

All of it was good.  Sula is on the list of places to go back to, I have to say.

After dinner, Conrad and I went to see Steven and Jenny's new (to us) home and sat and had a bit more wine before heading back to the hotel.  It was a full day of food (and steps for me!), and a very good one all in all.

a milestone birthday

Although we've been doing work on the condo to prepare it for putting on the market next month, this most recent trip to Vancouver coincided with a friend's milestone birthday.  60 years for Steven - hooray!

Steven is someone Conrad first met some 15 or more years ago through work in DC on a grants or other similar panel.  Over time, we've gotten together with him and Jenny and their children in Vancouver as well as here in California and in Chicago when we lived there.  It's been terrific knowing them, and so we were delighted to be in town to celebrate the event.

Steven was born in Mumbai, and that connection to India led him to choose an Indian buffet restaurant for the birthday party.  About 40 of us were sectioned off in the back of the restaurant.  That afforded us the space for speeches, a trivia quiz, the cake cutting, and a little karaoke.  That's Steven's dad rocking the microphone.

His singing was pretty awesome, I have to say.  Steven joined him briefly,

and it's clear that Steven should do more karaoke himself.  No, Conrad and I didn't brave the microphone, sorry.

It was a great party, and it was a real honour to join his family and take part in it all.

I think Jenny is up next, 60 in a few years, which will coincide with Conrad turning 70.  There should be some good parties to come!

wrapping up Vancouver

I got back from Vancouver around dinner time on Wednesday, having "enjoyed" a night with a raging sore throat.  I now have a cold coming on.  Yay?  Yes, I've tested.  Twice since my return.  Negative.  Just a run of the mill cold.  Ugh.

So with that and a busy return to work, I haven't made time to catch up on the rest of the Vancouver trip.  I shan't break it down into multiple entries.  Let's whip through a bunch of stuff instead!

I saw friends.  Sherri!

It's been a few years, but we caught up over coffee.  Chris and Allister!

I saw them both last month, and we'll see them out east later this month.  Jenny and Steven!

We'll see them again in eight days when we are up there for Steven's 60th birthday.

Merp was around.

We had beers!

And cocktails.

Including a purple Last Word (made with Empress Gin).

We ate well, especially an enjoyable evening at Joe Forte's

and an excellent lunch at Nightingale

and a dinner we wish had been better at ViJ's

and a super dinner at Chambar

and a nice dessert at our hotel restaurant.

I showed Van New Westminster oh so briefly.

We made it to English Bay.

And that's that, other than all the condo stuff.  Conrad and I will be up there again in 5 days!
