six, I think

Last day of August, and while I will end the month in the homeland (assuming my flight lands in Vancouver on time this evening), I started the day with a walk and then a... swim!

I think that's six times I've made it to the pool this month.  Six.  Far more than I've managed most months in recent times.  I'll get in what swims I can while in Vancouver, though, and carry on through September, hoping that next month will surpass this one.

For today, not the worst swim, not the best.  It was ok.  2050 yards done.  A small pat on the back to me for that one, I suppose.

as seen on the morning walk

I saw a post on Reddit the other day that showed a photo of Los Angeles and suggested that the hazy/foggy/smoggy conditions render it an urban hell.

Now, to be fair, I think that in many regards, the greater Los Angeles metro can be and is an urban hell.  And I do remember visiting in the early 90s and being amazed and horrified by the smog at the time.  But that photo?  I don't think it was a hellscape of pollution.

It's a welcome thing, or so I think but we often have overcast skies or mist or fog in the mornings.  The marine layer moves in over the metro, hugging up to the mountains and sometimes slipping through the passes.  It makes for cooler mornings, a nice thing for us.  May Grey, we call it.  June Gloom.  It exceeds those months, however.

It's August 31, and on my morning walk today, I saw this as I looked east on Union:

Nope, not pollution.  Walking south on Orange Grove a short time later, I felt a few drops from the condensation that was dripping off the palm trees.  The morning started with a good fog through much of my end of Pasadena.  It feels slightly autumnal, encountering it at this time of year, and oh, you can only imagine how much I yearn for autumn and winter and cooler temperatures and rain!

yeah, so...

... it was a swim.

And that's about all I can say for today's "effort".🤣

a tiny glimpse of Pasadena

Not much to report at my end of things.  Conrad, poor guy, came back from Michigan with his first (and may it be his last) case of COVID.

3.5 years of avoiding it, including when I had it almost a year ago, and now it hits him.  So, I spent a lot of yesterday in the condo with him isolated in the master bedroom and me downstairs, both of us masking when we had to interact.  I did laundry, I read and watched stuff on my iPad, I made sure I was around in case he needed something (he slept a lot).  So, no, not much to share.

I did get out on a morning walk this morning.  It was a lovely morning for it, and I was able to take an hour and wander a familiar route.  No Conrad with me, alas.  I haven't taken a lot of photos around town lately, I know, but the morning light was nice, and the plaza around it was quiet, so I took one of the Ambassador Auditorium.

Such a handsome building, and one I've been inside several times for Pasadena Symphony concerts.  So there you go, a wee bit of Pasadena to share on this Monday.

Now then, may Conrad be fine and testing negative by the time we travel Thursday evening!

Amara with Van

Conrad is en route home as I type, having spent the past few days in Michigan with his family.  So Van

and I got ourselves going at a luxuriously late hour this morning, making it to Amara by 10:15.  I'd already walked Olive a bit, and now it was time for a welcome breakfast.

The usual for me, of course.  When I find something I like, I stick with it.  Arepa to eat,

a decaf oat milk (yep, still the cleanse month) to drink.

Tasty!

And now Saturday is well underway.  Time to get some laundry done!

it's getting better?

What is this, five times in one month?  I think?  I'm talking about the wonder that is me actually making time to confront my recent nemesis, the lap pool.

Ah, to be fair, it was an excellent morning for it.  I had time in my schedule, and it was cool and overcast - less worry about sunburn!  So I got in and splashed back and forth and actually did more than 2000 yards, shockingly.  Not much more, but that is surely the longest I've done in a while.  Whew!
But no.  It was better today.  Better endurance, for sure, and although my turns are still a bit dubious, it wasn't horrible technique.  So, yay, I guess.
Oh, and I look so red because of the awning I was standing just under when I took the selfies.  🤣

beauty

Someone had a salon visit yesterday.

I unapologetically feature this sweet, gorgeous girl when I can.  She's a beauty.

That is all!🐕💗

Tropical Storm Hilary (aftermath)

So, yes, a tropical storm made its way through the Los Angeles area in the past 24 hours.  First time in decades, and first time since alerts were started, so it had everyone aflutter, trying to prepare.  And not unreasonably so, although I had to wonder at the media coverage of lines at grocery stores and the same level of stocking-up/hoarding that we saw early in the pandemic.

I've had a number of friends reach out and ask if we were safe here, so let me say that, yes, we were and are.  There are parts of Pasadena (the northern end of town, around the arroyo) that may be prone to mudslides or debris flow.  Most of the city, though, is like a gently tilted plane.  North is higher than south.  There are a few channelized creeks, as in the arroyo, but no river or larger stream.  Conrad and I live in an apartment building, and not on the ground floor.  Van's house sits above a street below.

The long and short of it is that we got wet.  3.2 inches fell, according to the weather app on my phone, in a 24-hour period, which is a lot.  But a lot of it also ran off the streets and into the drains and down toward the Los Angeles River or some such channel eventually.  Conrad and I went out this morning walking,

and we saw a lot of smaller plant debris (berries, flowers, leaves, needles, small branches) littering streets and sidewalks, but only a few larger branches down.

The arroyo had a healthy flow down the narrow channel,

backing up between Holly and Colorado to fill the broader channel,

but far from overflowing its banks.  By the time we finished the walk, the streets were starting to dry up.

And yes, there was an earthquake yesterday, a 5, centered near Ojai.  That's about 60 miles or so from us, so we felt a bit of a jiggle, but not too much else.  Weird, coincidental timing, but only coincidence.

We're fine, thank you to all who may have wondered.  My library seems to be fine as well, at least at the one campus.  The college will reopen tomorrow, and it will be back to normal, more or less.

post-amble breakfast

Saturday morning means a good walk for Conrad and me (even if Van were with us, he would likely not be getting out of bed that early, which is fine, of course!), longer than the ones we try to enjoy weekday mornings.  Yesterday we went out and about in Pasadena, wandering north of the 210 a while and somewhat east before we came back to Old Pasadena.  A total of a hair under five miles.  And, as you may have guessed, we ended up at Amara Cafe.

Our usuals for breakfast, though with the cleanse removing dairy from my diet, it was oat milk in my decaf latte.

Conrad looked cute.

  I enjoyed my arepa.

Conrad started taking photos of me taking photos until I told him to stop.

That goof.

Our habitual and welcome Saturday.  All the travel in the fall will limit when we can make it to Amara, alas, but we will make it there when we can!

Friday evening at the bar at Maestro

The look of a man who seems to think that I am the ham of our marriage.  Maybe he's the cheese?

After the meager lunch at work on Friday, it was a welcome thing to head to the bar at Maestro.  Hooray for familiar settings and faces.  Conrad got to enjoy a pair of Last Words (darn him!  I could really go for one),

and together we enjoyed a light dinner.

Guacamole and plantain chips to start with.

Octopus with potatoes, a cactus salad, and fideo (I didn't eat the noodles, and the creamy dollops are an aioli, not sour cream) for me for my dinner.

Conrad had the mole chicken, which always looks so very good.

And then we came home and had a nice and easy evening.  But ah, I love our early Friday evenings at the Maestro bar.

ridiculousness

The problem with a cleanse month is always when there is no control over a menu.  At least with our local favourite places, I know what I can eat in order to meet the restrictions that I have set on myself.  A work function at the college?  Not so easy.

Yesterday was Opening Day, and for the first time in a handful of years, we were all live and in person, enjoying the buffet lunch and celebration in one of the gyms.  I attended because I thought it would be a good to be visible, especially with a new librarian in tow.  I knew that I wouldn't have great choices for lunch, and I was right.  So here you have it:  my lunch.  Roasted summer squash.  A bit of a mango salsa.  A serving of spinach salad that probably had some sugar in the dressing, but I decided to get it for a little substance (and eat around the bits of feta).

Sigh.

Day 19 today.  A little less than two weeks to go.  Some days it's just boring eating, right?

Again! (and again!)

A busy week all in all, and hey, look at this!  I swam on Tuesday.  And so did Conrad.

Not a great swim, not a fast swim, not a long swim.  But a swim nonetheless.

And then - will wonders never cease? - I swam yesterday as well.  Because of my schedule, it was even shorter and no less slow and no less crappy, but hey, it was a swim!

Onward with the weekend.  May there be blogworthy things to share from it....

opossum!

Not much commentary to offer in this post, just a couple of photos, and small bit of wonderment at catching sight of some urban wildlife.  Conrad and I took Olive out for a walk yesterday morning when we got up.  As we headed into Memorial Park, we saw a critter scooting along, not too fast.  An opossum, the sort of thing that Olive tends to guard her territory from.  But she paid no attention - we don't even know that she saw it.  She let it be, we let it be.  It went that way, we went the other.

I hope it made it across the street safely.

dinner last night

I was a busy boy yesterday, I tell you.  A long walk with Conrad to start the mornings, breakfast, groceries, a lot of cleaning/tidying, and then in the kitchen from 3:00 onward, punctuated by the times I got to sit at the dinner table.  After Jennifer and Sanders left, I got all the dishes done, and then it was bed.  I slept terribly, so bodily fatigued that I couldn't get comfortable.  Ah well.  Dinner was nice, at least.

I found some gorgeous, thick halibut for dinner.  It wasn't cheap, but then, buying dinner at a restaurant for five would have been a lot more.  I kept that in mind and prepared the meal.  The halibut I tossed with a bit of olive oil and some seasonings (salt, pepper, oregano, paprika).  Cooked in a pan, then set atop some red lentil puree (actually a soup recipe that I strained, pureed, and strained again).  I gave each plate a few pieces of roasted romanesco, and then topped the fish with minced red onion marinated in lime juice and tossed with mint, cilantro, and parsley.

All in all, it was tasty.

For Van and me, dessert was simply some gorgeous sweet cherries (I love this time of year for all the various stone fruit), but I made a fregolata and set it out with some goat milk gouda for the others.

Nice!

And when all was said and done, I was a sweaty, exhausted boy.  Happy with my work, but man, I was pooped!

starting Saturday just right

It's late Saturday morning, and Conrad is taking a bit of a nap upstairs before we begin cleaning and getting ready for Van and some friends coming to dinner.  We've had a great start to the day, though.

One nice thing about the cleanse is that no booze makes for better sleep.  I slept well again last night, and was up shortly after 6.  Conrad got himself going as well, and we were out the door just before 7, setting out on foot.  All told, we did 4.8 or so miles this morning, stopping for breakfast at Amara after most of the walk was done.

Ah, Amara.  I love Saturday morning routine, and I love going there.  My usual:  an arepa with perrico eggs and avocado.

I swapped out regular milk for oat milk in my decaf latte.

The sun was shining, the temperature was still mild.  It was a good breakfast.

So, yes, Saturday is great so far.  Now then, to get things done around here.  With luck, dinner will turn out ok, and I will be able to post about it tomorrow.

Have a great weekend you few and stalwart readers!

tostada

The cleanse marches on.  Day eleven.  And a Friday, which means Maestro.  So while Conrad enjoyed a couple of cocktails, I drank plenty of sparkling water and wished I were having something better.  Ah well.

There was a bright spot, though.  Although I am not letting myself eat most of the items on the menu, there was a new special, a pair of tostadas topped with some lightly pickled carrot, cucumber, slices of raw fish, and a seasoned mayonnaise.  And it was delicious.  So good that we ordered a second round.  Two tostadas plus some plantain chips and guacamole (and all the water) have me filled nicely.

Now for a quiet Friday evening at home...

twice in one week?

Look!  It's an August miracle if ever there was one!  Yes, friends, yesterday afternoon I carved out time to head to the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center again.

And with Conrad in tow!  (To be fair, he was also with me earlier this week, but I didn't get a photo of him.)

I did a little longer, a little more.  I made it to a mile, in fact.  I wish I could say that's something to be proud of, but it's pathetic.  And, Peter, it's better than zero.  So well done-ish, I guess.  May I get back in the water a couple of times again next week!

a small mystery, now solved

Last week, I can't remember which day, there was a parcel in the mail for me from Amazon.  Not something I had ordered, no.  It was a jigger.

A pretty cool, modern, stylish looking one.  And a slip of paper with a happy birthday message.

And no name.

I posted a photo to Facebook, but no one owned up to it.  I had no idea, and so I didn't know who to thank.

Today another parcel arrived from Amazon.  A mixing beaker

to go with the jigger.  Also pretty cool, modern, and stylish.  And a slip of paper with a happy birthday message.

And this time, a name!  Hooray!

So I have Rick, a lovely friend in Kentucky, to thank, and thank him I already have.  A mystery that nagged at me for a week or so, now solved.  And cocktails to be made when the cleanse month is done!

the little girl is unimpressed

I mean, I don't actually think Joey will win Charity's heart on this season of The Bachelorette, but he is affable, definitely likeable.

Olive?  Just not feeling it.  Sorry, Joey.🐕🤣

back at the RBAC

As summer winds down (at least in relation to my school year), my schedule has opened up a bit, and that means I was able to get myself to the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center yesterday for a short swim.  Short, because of fear of sunburn.  Short because of how awful my swimming is these days.

To be fair, I didn't feel as terrible as I feared, given it's been a few weeks since last I splashed.  The technique was not altogether awful.  Hooray for that?

I'll hope to be back in the pool a couple of times a week this fall.  We shall see.  For now, an August swim done!
